Manager of the Anguilla National Football team Nigel Linton has indicated that
while they lost to Guyana last night at the Guyana National Providence 7-0 in the Group 5 opener of the Scotiabank CFU Men’s Caribbean Cup, they are not disheartened as they are on a rebuilding path.
Speaking at the post match press conference, Linton said that they have come a long way in the six weeks they have been together and were able to introduce 15 year-old Keanu Richardson whilst also featuring elder statesman and Captain Kevin Hawley who has been around at the national level for over 20 years.
Hawley noted in his comments that they were able to compete with the Guyanese, noting that the first ten minutes was very good for them as they were able to keep the ball out but lost composure thereafter.
“In the second half we were able to regain our composure and play a much more fruitful game. Overall, we have building blocks; this is only our second game in the last six weeks, we have not been together for a very long time but there are lots of positives to take from the game,” Hawley stated.
He expressed confidence that in the next few years, Anguilla will come on and be a force to reckon with once they continue to invest in developing. Hawley also gave a commitment to being around for sometime more in order to nurture and guide this young generation of players.
The captain complimented his charges for the positive attitude displayed after going down by 5 by the end of the first half, this he posited, was one of the positives that came out of the match for Anguilla. (Franklin Wilson)
