Thirty Eight year old Shannon Stanton Crawford made his First Class debut last Friday in the 10th round of the WICB Professional Cricket League between Guyana Jaguars and Jamaica Scorpion at the Guyana
National Stadium.
Crawford, a Fire Officer with the Guyana Fire Service became a fully qualified Cricket Umpire in 2006 when he emerged as top student of the West Indies Cricket Umpires’ Oral and Practical Examinations with 93%. He was then elevated through ranks of various Umpires’ panel of the Guyana Cricket Board officiating in Inter-County and National Cricket Competitions.
In 2011 he was appointed to the WICB Junior Umpires’ Panel officiating in Regional Age Groups Tournaments, then elevated to the WICB Emerging Umpires’ panel in 2015.
Known for his excellent deportment, attention to details with a comprehensive knowledge of the Laws and Playing Conditions, Crawford who is the president of the Georgetown and Demerara Cricket Umpires and Scorers Association, has so far officiated as on Field Umpire in Forty-Eight (48) WICB Regional Age Groups Cricket Matches, and Standby Umpire in Nine (9) First Class Matches Along With Four (4) Lists ‘A’ Matches.
He admits that it a tough task that requires continuous training and studying, dedication, commitment, hard work and an undying Love for the Job. Crawford thanked GOD, expressed gratitude and appreciation to the GCUC, WICUA, GCB and WICB for their confidence in his ability as well as his family, especially mother Carmen, whom he describes as his inspiration, the Guyana Fire Service particularly Chief Fire Officer Marlon Gentle and the umpiring fraternity in West Indies.
“My Mom sets high standards and my achievements bring her joy in life and that inspire me to work harder, while Umpires Dasroy Balgobin, Deonarine Seonarine, Wazeer Dhanraj of Essequibo, the late Clyde Duncan, Eddie Nicholls, Nigel Duguid, Joseph Jeffrey, Colin Alfred, Davteerth Ananjit along with WICB Senior Panel Umpires, as well as WICB Rawl Lewis and ICC Umpire Coach David Levens have played a big role in my Development. My aim and objective is to continue working hard, being coachable, fine tune all aspects of Cricket Umpiring for continued growth and development,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Guyana Cricket Umpires Council has extended congratulations to Crawford on his elevation. In a release the GCUC stated that Crawford is a prudent umpire who is always willing to learn and assist others. His elevation came as no surprise and is a result of his hard work, dedication and commitment. The Council would like to wish him well is career.
