“At least 63.6% of the starting team would be players out of the Stag Elite League (SEL) and at most it could be 82% when the final decision is made after the session tonight (last night).”
Stats shared with the media by Co-Coach of Guyana’s Golden Jaguars, Jamaal Shabazz when the Guyana Football Federation hosted a press conference at the 704 Sports Bar yesterday ahead of today’s opening Group 5 clash against Anguilla in the Caribbean Football Union Men’s Caribbean Cup at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence from 19:00hrs.
In showering praises on the SEL, Shabazz underscored that the level of the players coming to the national team have been vastly improved as a result of them playing consistently at a competitive level comparable to the players that come in from overseas.
Co-Coach Wayne Dover, who has been working in partnership with Shabazz for a number of years at this level, noted that the competition for places in the 18-man squad has been fierce.
Dover too, complimented the SEL and the role it has and continues to play when it comes to support of the national set up.
He posited that with the return of some of the tested, tried and proven players integrating with the young and exciting brigade, fans and the nation is in for a moment of greatness come this evening.
“With the likes of Gregory Richardson who has demonstrated a lot of discipline this time around leading from the front, Christopher Nurse, Walter Moore we can light up the match tomorrow (today) where the fans will benefit immensely. We want the fans to know that tomorrow’s (today) game is more about us qualifying and giving them a result that is needed for them to be happy as they always want to be.”
Shabazz announced that both Christopher Nurse and Gregory Richardson have been appointed Co-Captains of the Golden Jaguars for today’s match.
Richardson thanked the coaches for putting together a good team which he says is strong and will put on a good show for all.
Nurse in his remarks shared that they have been as thorough in preparing as possible and will not be taking the Anguillans lightly.
“We are preparing in the best way we can and taking them seriously We’ve watched videos, we’re doing the right things in training and making sure that tomorrow night (tonight) we go out and give our best.”
The long serving National Captain proffered that the team has something to prove reflecting on the last competition game that the Guyanese played here against St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
“A lot of us left that night, we felt like we let the country down because it was a game we thought we should have won and progress. So we have a point to prove, we have a game to win. So we encourage the fans to come out and support the team.”
