Local Government Election results represent victory for the people — Communities Minister

Minister of Communities, Ronald Bulkan, says that the results of the recently held Local Government Elections “represent victory for the people of Guyana and not for any political party”.
Addressing the media at a press briefing at the Ministry of the Presidency on Saturday, the Minister with oversight over the newly elected Councils and Councillors said that “the results of the elections represent an opportunity for the elected officials to serve the residents of their constituency.”
He said that as far as the successful coalition candidates are concerned, the elections offer them an opportunity to participate, and to lead in the renewal of the communities “and the reversal of the decay that have behest many.”
As far as the Ministry of Communities is concerned, the holding of the long-awaited elections represents the first of three components in the restoration and rehabilitation of the collapsed system of local government.
“Going forward from the democratic renewal of the life of Councils, the other two main components that have been identified and articulated are to ensure that there is institutional strengthening and building of capacity within the new Councils.
This component is particularly geared towards the core of Councillors who are coming into office with a great degree of enthusiasm but who (are) probably lacking the requisite experience to be able to manage the affairs of their communities,” Bulkan explained.
He said that the third component of the rehabilitation efforts is to ensure that the Councils have access to sufficient financial resources so as to execute their responsibilities, towards the residents of their communities.”
Local Government elections were successfully completed in Guyana, after a 22-year delay, on Friday March 18, 2016
According to preliminary results, the APNU+AFC coalition candidate won in Georgetown. The coalition also managed to secure most of the seats in the Municipalities of Lethem, Bartica, Linden and New Amsterdam.
The main Opposition People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C), is tied with the coalition for the township of Mabaruma, but is reported to have won the townships of Rose Hall, Corriverton and Anna Regina.
