Mar 22, 2016 Letters
Dear Editor,
The letter of March 20th 2016 “The Education Ministry has a favourite printer”
was not a startling one as it speaks to reality. The beast might change but the basic nature remains! As much as I am a supporter of the government and have welcomed the refreshing change in my country, the fact is that some old customs die hard.
Favouritism and partiality are intrinsic parts of any government as they have to get the business of government done. The only caution is that such favouritism and partiality should not be blatant as the consequential interpretation is that only the government has changed while the same customs continue.
You Mister Editor are privy to the named person in that letter and hopefully you would use your good offices and forward that to the President’s Office as a moral duty and to bring to notice what that ministry felt might be a secret ‘secret’!
Now I would like to add my concern and complaint about the very Ministry of Education which recently awarded a catering contract to a totally unqualified person. The established facts about that catering contract which was very recently awarded are:
1. The person has no established catering establishment
2. The qualifying conditions were changed to accommodate that person
3. The person is a strong party person
4. The main official dealing with the contract is a close friend of that person.
I have said time and time, over and over, that Guyana is a small country,
and that very few secrets are ever secrets. Guyanese like to talk and worst of all boast when they strike it good in any activity. The past government was not afraid to award contracts in openingly blatant favouritism. That should not be a part of this government. Note my words ‘openingly blatant.’ I name no names in this matter but any quick check on the recently awarded catering contract would indicate how factual my facts are. Time to straighten up and fly right you folks in the Education Ministry.
