Raymond Samaroo, a former patient of the National Psychiatric Hospital, Fort Canje, Berbice who had appeared in court on offence of car theft was once again granted bail for allegedly stealing another vehicle.
Samaroo, 26, of Kitty, Georgetown is accused of stealing one Toyota Premio motorcar valued at $1.7M along with $15,000 cash, property of Farida Hamid Samaroo on March 17, last.
The route 40 minibus driver was released on $75,000 bail by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan and ordered to return to court on April 25, when he will appear before Magistrate Alex Moore.
Police Prosecutor, Inspector Neville Jeffers, did not disclose any facts of the matter to the court. But he pointed out that the defendant was referred to the psychiatric hospital because he was deemed unfit to stand trial by State Psychiatrist, Dr. Bhairo Harry. However, Jeffers said that Raymond Samaroo was discharged from the mental institution last Wednesday and committed this offence the following day.
Prosecutor Jeffers also told the court that the defendant has matters of a similar nature before Magistrate Fabayo Azore.
Magistrate McLennan after listening to the prosecutor’s submission stated that the man has to be mentally fit to stand trial since he was released from the institution.
Last June, Samaroo was remanded to prison for allegedly stealing a $5M motorcar from Rishi Lall at Sheriff Street, Georgetown. He is also accused of stealing this same vehicle again from in the vicinity of the Kitty Police Station on Alexander Street, Kitty.
Raymond Samaroo is also before the courts for the alleged theft of a Honda motorcar valued at $5M, a cell phone and $30,000 cash belonging to Rhonda Joaquin. This incident occurred at Garnett Street, Kitty.
These matters are still engaging the attention of the court.
