-recount in District 6, Region 3 produce unchanged results
The recount sought by the People’s Progressive Party in Berbice and parts of Region Three did not affect the final results of the elections, said the Guyana Elections Commission, yesterday.
The Guyana Elections Commission also released figures indicating that the voter turnout for the historic Local Government Elections (LGE) on Friday was 47 percent.
The People’s Progressive Party (PPP) had called for limited recounts in District 6 because it was not satisfied with its showing in the Municipal Elections (New Amsterdam, Rose Hall and Corriverton).
According to the Chief Elections Officer (CEO), Keith Lowenfield, the request for recounts was made in the Municipality of Rose Hall, while limited recounts were requested in Constituencies 5 and 7.
He had noted that in the Municipality of Maida-Tarlogie, on the Corentyne, there was a request for a recount. In addition, he had noted that in the Macedonia/Joppa Local Authority Area there was the request for the recount of one constituency.
In Rose Hall, Lowenfield had said that there was a probable tie that might have resulted in the call for a recount. Lowenfield had added that there were still some “statutory subsets” for GECOM to satisfy before the entire exercise could be brought to a close over the next few days. In the 1994 elections the PPP won Rose Hall outright.
The election was held in 71 Local Authority Areas, which includes 62 Neighbourhood Democratic Councils (NDCs) and nine Municipalities – an overall total of 508 Constituencies.
Of the 542 constituencies, 149 were a “no contest” since only one party would have expressed interest in contesting in each.
In the voter turnout results released by GECOM yesterday, 507,584 voters were captured on the Official Voters’ List and 1,562 Polling Stations were open to facilitate voting. However, there were 239,070 votes cast in total, with 2,747 being rejected or spoilt.
The Local Authorities (Elections) Act was amended in 2009 to include as many people as possible, apart from political parties to present themselves as candidates. There were 83 groups, three political parties, 63 individual candidates three Political Parties and 17 voluntary groups.
