Following a poor performance at the recently concluded AMBC boxing Qualifier, English speaking Caribbean nations are to meet to carry out a post mortem and plot the way for the future of the sport in the region.
This meeting is being pushed by president of the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association Steve Ninvalle with support from Barbados, St Lucia and Jamaica and is set for May in Barbados.
Ninvalle informed that the Caribbean could not get together three fighters in the finals despite having more than 20 boxers at the competition. Guyana sent two boxers and both lost in their opening matches.
Ninvalle said, “The results say that locally there is a something lacking and, regionally there is also a deficiency. I have had several reports from Argentina and they all tell of the same thing. In these turbulent waters it’s either we row together or sink individually.”
“The region has had teams preparing for months in Cuba. Several of those teams have turned up empty handed. To the best of my knowledge only Trinidadian heavyweight Nigel Paul has made it into the final and is guaranteed a trip to Rio,” he added.
President of the St Lucian Amateur Boxing Association David ‘Shakes’ Christopher, acknowledged that the Caribbean faced several challenges in Buenos Aries, some having nothing to do with talent deficiency. He said most decisions given against regional fighters were nothing less that atrocious, calling it…”It was robbery without mask. I am still astounded by what I witnessed…..”
Ninvalle said everything would be put on the table during the regional meeting including the much touted idea of a regional Olympic Box Off.
Head of the Jamaica Amateur Boxing Association Stephen Jones, despite the unfavorable results, extended heartfelt appreciation to the boxers for their efforts in carrying our flags high on the other side of the world. He congratulated Trinidad for their fighter who made it through.
Jones noted, “That being said, from all the feedback that I’ve received, I’m heartened to understand that there is a very minimal gap that separates the boxers from those countries that did qualify, and ours. None of the Caribbean boxers were outclassed, it’s just the minor technicalities that need to be adjusted in order to take us to that next level, and this can only come from increased activity in our region.”
“The Caribbean boxing fraternity is determined to continue assessing our position and building on the positives, as is evidenced by the immediate call for a meeting of the minds to analyze what was and chart the course for what needs to be.
Jamaica, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Cayman Island, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, St Lucia, St Vincent, Trinidad and Tobago and the US Virgin Islands attended the Olympic qualifier.
