‘The Rocky but Righteous Road to Independence’ is a publication that chronicles, through the eyes of the author, how Guyana became an independent nation. The author is Mr. Hamilton Green, who just days ago left the office of Mayor after serving in that capacity for more than two decades.
The publication was completed just a few weeks ago in time to enlighten the nation about Guyana’s trek to independence even as preparations are being made to celebrate 50 years of independence.
Guyana became an independent nation on May 26, 1966 effectively emancipating itself from British colonial rule.
The introduction of the publication, according to Green, represents his “contribution to the youth and not so young of this country.” This is in light of the fact, he said, that he saw the need to share his views of the measures taken towards independence.
Green recalled that he is among three individuals still alive who had roles to play in the process. Llewellyn John, attorney-at-law and former Councillor at the Georgetown municipality, along with Green, is the surviving person who took part in a constitutional independence conference. The conference was held in London at Marble House in November of 1965. And it was at that London conference that the date for independence was set.
And it was because of the wealth of information he possesses about how Guyana gained its independence, Green said that he was inclined to write the publication. “I believe I have a duty to write about that conference to tell you how we arrived at the date of May 26… To tell you what are the events that led up to that final conference in London, a conference that a certain party did not attend and perhaps that is why we do not have the zeal, the enthusiasm, the eagerness as we celebrate our golden jubilee,” said Green during a farewell forum held in his honour at City Hall last week.
But Green was not willing to share much else about his completed writings since he is hopeful that persons would seek to acquire their own copy.
Guyana was able to secure independence during the Prime Ministerial tenure of Linden Forbes Sampson Burnham who a few years later was named Executive President.
And last week, Green, in emphasising his desire to ensure that Guyana’s history is known said, “I have a responsibility to write so that our young people would know the history of our country…a nation that is bereft of its history is nothing at all.
“The Europeans created a history for their own purposes, and a difficulty we’ve had in Guyana (is that) many of our contemporary leaders have not written and I want to make that my legacy…to write from my own experiences so that you and your children’s children will have a document upon which to anchor their forward movement,” said Green.
He urged last week, “You have got to know your history, your background to know where you are and to know where you are going…”
According to Green, who currently holds the portfolio of Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Central Housing and Planning Authority (CH&PA), he was encouraged to do some writing by some influential people.
