Defending champions the Berbice Volleyball Association (BVA) has named a strong 14 man team that will once again be travelling to Trinidad and Tobago in their effort to retain top honours when they competed in the FLOW sponsored junior volleyball tournament in the Twin Island Republic.
When the team made their entry into the competition last year they swept all and sundry and came out victorious. Thus they will be returning to the land of “the Humming Bird”, to show that their win in their inaugural appearance was no fluke.
Most of the squad which has been in place since last year was selected following a series of trial matches and practice sessions conducted by the BVA and according national head coach Levi Nedd they are expected to triumph again. Teams are expected from Trinidad and Tobago, St Kitts and Barbados among other places. The tournament will be played in Mayaro Trinidad.
Nedd, who was also a former national captain and the current President of the BVA, will accompany the team as Manager/ Coach.
The team, which is dominated by players of the Port Mourant Training Centre (PMTC), will be led by captained by Youganand Dhoray of Albion United, while the vice captain is Davendra Latchman of Port Mourant Training Centre (PMTC). The rest of the squad reads; Klondyke Rodney, Marcellos Hector, Samuel Fraser, Vickram Nandram, Reaad Razak, Jermaine Munroe, Lezon Khan, Joel Cort, Joel Hughes, Ralwyn Heywood all of The PMTC along with Ravi Rampartab of No 52 Survivors and Kellon Leitch of Tain Humanitarian.
They are expected to participate in their final practice match today against a strong PMTC select team at the PMTC all purpose court from 10:00 hrs.
Other officials accompanying the team are Malika Jervis, Devindra Budhoo and Nadine Benjamin. The team is expected back home on Easter Sunday. (Samuel Whyte)
