Dear Editor,
While it is commendable that the local beverage giants, Banks DIH Limited, have decided to fund the reconstruction of the Independence Arch, once situated at Ruimveldt, Georgetown, adjacent to First Street, Alexander Village. Indeed, that such a piece of historical landmark, upon being dismantled to facilitate the construction of the four (4) lane roadway, couldn’t have been stored safely for reassembling. Since this unfortunate situation occurred under the previous Government/Administration. Editor, it’s my sincere desire that never again should such callousness occur! Moreover, with sentiments of anti-nationalism attached! Similarly, the re-sitting and its implications, whereby the following have to be taken into serious consideration: The adjoining communities of Alexander Village and Riverview are both predominantly Indo-Guyanese, which by extension can be construed as PPP/C supporters.
However, the current administration at the last National and Regional Elections, through the AFC made inroads, in securing additional votes when compared to the previous Elections. As a consequence, relocating the Independence Arch from Ruimveldt to Agricola, reeks of ethnical preference. At this juncture a meaningful thought for reconsideration, relating to the shifting should be entertained. Additionally, the economical benefits that Banks DIH LTD have derived for the past 50 years, from both communities! How would the management react if a boycott of its products or a lull in sales is implemented by both communities? In relocating the Arch, would nationalism, nation building, inclusiveness and democratic values all essential for self-rule, ahead of observing fifty (50) years of Independence be achieved?
Maybe business communities in close proximity of Agricola can be approached to fund an Arch/Monument/Sculpture as a dedication to fifty (50) years of Independence. Likewise this would be applicable to other areas, i.e E.C.D, for any further undertaking of a similar nature. Would it be prudent for the Semi-Arch, in Industry to be dismantled and be relocated in Sophia, or the possibility of an injunction being filed in the High Court, challenging the legality of relocating the Ruimveldt Arch? Can the relevant Minister, provide the appropriate answer (s) for this exercise, since it defies logic, inclusiveness and transparency?
Lester Sealey.
