Despite playing with a man short from the 13th minute after Okenie Fraser (former Pele player) was booked for a second time (5th & 13th) Fruta Conquerors still found the resolve to grind out a 2-0 win over Pele FC while the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) trounced Georgetown Football Club (GFC) 5-1 when the STAG Elite League FINALE continued on Wednesday evening last at the Tucville Community ground.
Even with the return of Gregory ‘Jackie Chan’ Richardson after serving a two game ban following a red card, Pele did not have the arsenal on the night to stave off the constant attacks of the home team which scored in each half to secure full points while consolidating their second place on the points table with 13 points; Pele is fifth on 7 points.
Richardson did not do his confidence and reputation any good when he was red carded in the 90th minute for using abusive language to the Referee, his second red in as many matches.
The home side ensured that they combined to keep Pele’s most potent strike force, Richardson out of the lime light and they succeeded in that regard. Conquerors’ first goal was scored via a header from Jahall Greaves in the 11th minute.
Richardson did get a few chances which were virtually sitters but failed to bury those opportunities which came back to haunt him and his side. With Conquerors’ defense proving too much for Pele to overcome, Jermaine Junior put the sealer on the game with his 66th minute strike.
In the opening match, the GDF behind a hat-trick from Olvis Mitchell ensured that GFC remained winless in this round with a comfortable 5-1 win. Mitchell set the early tone for the Army as GFC were under tremendous pressure to contain the nippy Army squad.
By the 15th minute GFC were trailing by 2 goals as Mitchell netted in the 12th and 15th minute respectively. GFC reduced the GDF’s advantage in the 51st minute when Lennox Cort found the back of the nets but four minutes later, the two goal cushion was restored when Mitchell achieved his hat-trick in the 55th minute.
Sherwin Ceasar in the 78th minute and Delroy Fraser in the first minute of added on time sunk the Army’s fourth and fifth goals respectively to seal victory for the GDF which took them into third place on 10 points, GFC remains at the bottom with a single point from six matches.
Two matches were scheduled for last evening when play continued at the Leonora Track Facility Football Field. Alpha was down to play Buxton United while Slingerz opposed Monedderlust.
Next Thursday play will continue at the #5 ground as the league takes a break for next Tuesday’s Men’s Caribbean Cup match between Guyana and Anguilla at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence from 19:00hrs. (Franklin Wilson)
