West Indies Under-19 World Cup Captain Shimron Hetmyer has returned to the Guyana Jaguars team for today’s must-win match PCL four-day First-Class final round game against the Jamaica Scorpions at Providence.
An aggressive left-handed opener who could also bat in the middle order, Hetymer has played four First-Class matches and replaces the injured Shiv Chanderpaul in one of two changes to the side which held on for a hard fought draw in Antigua against Leewards.
Off-spinner Steven Jacobs is the other change, coming in for pacer Ronsford Beaton on what is expected to be a slow turner at Providence. The Jaguars are hoping to become the only Guyanese side to win back-to-back First-Class titles but Jamaica who won a record five consecutive titles from 2008 and with no chance of being Champions this season, could deny Guyana with an upset win.
The Jaguars have led from the start and have not lost a single game since Barbados won by two runs in November 2014 at Providence and has extended their unbeaten streak to 16 games. History however, means very little on what transpires on match day and second placed Barbados are just seven points behind the defending champions.
A win for Barbados against the Leewards in St Kitts and a loss or a draw for Guyana would give the Bajans their 21st title and deny Guyana their eighth. “With Barbados only seven points behind now, we obviously have to play to win the next game outright” said Skipper Leon Johnson, who would like the GCB to allow the use of the lights at the Stadium in this crucial game.
Johnson aims to join Clive Lloyd and Roger Harper as Guyana Captains with two titles and become the first to do so in consecutive seasons. He is the only batsman with 700 runs and a lot will be depended on him with the bat.
Vishaul Singh, who along with the Region’s most consistent batsman in recent times (Kraigg Braithwaite) has the most centuries this season (3) and is second in the aggregate with 690 runs. He is also a key batsman, especially since the experienced Shiv Chanderpaul is unavailable.
Much would be expected of Rajendra Chandrika and Tagenarine Chanderpaul at the top of the order and the 19-year-old Chanderpaul would need to be a bit more positive since Guyana needs every batting point to stay ahead at the finish line.
Hetmyer could bat at three with Johnson, Singh, Reifer, Anthony Bramble, Jacobs, Veerasammy Permaul, Devendra Bishoo and Keon Joseph coming in that order. The Jaguars bowling could hinge on Bishoo, Permaul and Jacobs with pace support from Joseph and Reifer.
Jamaica’s batting will depend on John Campbell, Andre McCarty and Antiguan Devon Thomas are the only batsmen with a hundred this season. Bajan Kurt Edwards is the only other batsman with 300 runs.
Jaguars’ squad: Tagenarine Chanderpaul, Rajendra Chandrika, Leon Johnson (Captain), Vishaul Singh (V/Capt), Shimron Hetmyer, Raymon Reifer, Anthony Bramble, Christopher Barnwell, Veerasammy Permaul, Gudakesh Motie, Devendra Bishoo, Keon Joseph, Steven Jacobs.
