There is no doubt that the current slowness in the economy has created some uncertainty within the corporate community and this reality is affecting the level of support that many members of the Group is willing to offer
to the sports fraternity.
However, Group 4 racer Danny Persaud while lamenting the effect that this development is having on many competitors preparations, told this newspaper at his garage yesterday that his focus this year is on touring and representing Guyana at the Caribbean Motor Racing Championship (CMRC) and to this ensure he is putting everything in place to secure his selection.
“We are definitely placing our focus on touring and all our energies right now is concentrated on getting the car working at its optimum in terms of efficiency and speed to make a real challenge in the Group,” Persaud stated.
He noted that with most of the top drivers in the division already indicating their intentions to compete at this Sunday’s National ‘Race of Champions’ Meet’ he will have to be at his best to get a podium spot.
When questioned about his confidence, Persaud said that he is usually very confident heading into Meets and providing the car’s reliability holds up throughout the day, he sees no reason why he cannot be in the mix.
Persaud drives a Mazda Miata and while success did not arrive instantly, this young speedster has shown the fortitude and skill that contradicts his short tenure in the sport.
He has competed with some measure of success at both the local and regional levels and most pundits believe that his movement in the sport could only be upwards, especially with his driving ability and unwillingness to be intimidated by ‘big’ name competitors.
Sunday will be a real test for him with the likes of reigning CMRC and national champion Kristian Jeffrey confirmed along with Mark Vieira, Irfaan Kalamadeen, Kevin Jeffrey and Andrew King likely to be on the starting grid.
Twenty-four races are carded for the day and the first one is set for 09:30 hrs.
Meanwhile, among the sponsors on board to date are GTT and Fly Jamaica and admission to the races is $1,000 for adults and $500 for children under the age of 12 years.
