Residents of the East Bank of Demerara can now breathe a sigh of relief since works on the Lot 1 area of the East Bank Road Expansion Project, have recommenced.
During last week, equipment belonging to BK International and Gaico Construction were already being mobilised while manual traffic controls, and cordons were seen in position.
Yesterday, works were being carried out both in Providence and Covent Garden.
The contract to complete that section – Providence to Covent Garden, with a length of 2.65km – was initially awarded to Dipcon Engineering Services at a price of US$8M.
However, Dipcon had only completed 59 percent of the contract when all works were “effectively ceased” in May 2015 – two years after the project was scheduled for the completion date of April, 30, 2013.
What followed after was a discussion with the company and the ministry where an “agreeable settlement” was reached. On August 16, 2015, the contract was terminated.
In recent reports, the company allegedly stated that it was faced with a series of issues such as the rising cost of materials and delays in the removal of utilities from the area.
Earlier this week, Kaieteur News met with the Managing Director of Gaico Construction, Komal Singh.
Singh stated that no changes would be done to the initial design of the road. He continued that construction is expected to be completed in August. However; the company would like to complete a substantial amount of work by May.
He further stated that the bases of the traffic lights will be erected by month-end.
Gaico Construction and GEM Ltd. were also awarded the contract for Lot 2 – from Vreed-en-Rust to Prospect – with a length of 1.55km, to the tune of US$5.8 M. The contract was completed in May 2015 and is in its defects liability period which concludes in May 2017.
Lot 3, Prospect to Great Diamond, with a length of 1.20km, was completed in June 2015 by BK International Inc. to the amount of US$3.5M.
