– Electorate still at a loss about Local Govt. Elections – PPP/C
The People‘s Progressive Party Civic PPP/C is once again accusing the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) of failing to provide the public with sufficient information and guidance as it relates to the upcoming Local Government Elections.
This view was expressed by PPP/C General Secretary Clement Rohee even as he expressed that the opposition party is ready for the polls slated for March 18, 2016. The PPP/C General Secretary noted that GECOM’s efforts aimed at preparing the masses for the elections leave much to be desired.
“As far we are concerned the public relations of GECOM is still piss poor. They are not performing based on the budget that they have at their disposal, “
Rohee said that based on interactions with the electorate, people still don’t know what the elections is all about. However the party official noted that the PPP/C is doing its part to educate the electorate “because long ago we realized we can’t rely on GECOM to do anything for us.
“Our Public Relations work targets our supporters and our message is getting across to our supporters as best as we could.”
Rohee also made an appeal to the newspapers and other media outlets to assist in the process of educating the electorate on the procedures and purpose of the elections.
The PPP/C General Secretary expressed these views during a press conference held at Freedom House, on Tuesday.
Rohee told the media that the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) says that it is pleased with the response of its supporters to its call for maximum mobilization and participation in the local government elections scheduled for Friday.
After 21 years, the date for the long overdue Local Government Elections was finally announced by Minister of Communities Ronald Bulkan. Local Government Elections were last held in 1994, even though the constitution clearly stipulates that that they should be held every three years. The extensive delay was caused by reforms agreed to by the then (PPP/C) government and the People’s National Congress.
Over the years, there were many calls and protest actions for the then PPP government to hold the elections. The PPP had even vowed that once it was re-elected in the 2011 General and Regional Elections, the elections would be held within a year.
The date was announced by the new government following the passing of the Local Government (Amendment) Bill 2015 – the last bit of legislation needed to hold the elections. The Bill was passed by an unopposed Government last July. Parts of the Bill were passed and assented to in 2013 under the last Parliament – the Fiscal Transfer Act, the Municipal and District Councils Amendment Act, and the Local Government Commission Act.
