A fine half century from opener Vishwanauth Ramlakhan handed East Coast a comfortable eight-wicket victory over East Bank when the Demerara Cricket Board Inter-Association U19 50-over tournament commenced yesterday.
Ramlakhan batted with composure, hitting nine fours in a fluent 55 off 53 balls as East Coast successfully chased 117, ending on 118-2 in 19.4 overs at Enterprise. Ramlakhan added 51 for the first wicket with Bhaskar Yadram to set his team on course before Yadram was removed by seamer Bhojnarine Singh after smashing three fours in 25. Ramlakhan continued to time the ball well and featured a second wicket of 51 with Ramnarine Chatura before he was caught off leg spinner Ershad Ali. Chatura remained unbeaten on 26 while Gavin Boodwah made 13.
Batting first, East Bank never recovered after losing two early wickets and were bowled out in 27.3 overs. Ali was outstanding with the bat cracking eight fours in scoring 59 off 51 balls. He added 23 for the fourth wicket with Quazim Yusuf before Yusuf went for nine. Only opener Mark Ramsammy with 14 reached double figures in an otherwise dismal batting display. Bhaskar Yadram was the pick of the bowlers with 3-4, while Rajendra Singh claimed 2-13, Pradesh Balkishun 2-18 and Chatura 2-29.
The other match which was scheduled for Wales between Georgetown and West Demerara was rained out without a ball being bowled.
The competition continues tomorrow. (Zaheer Mohamed)
