A 45-year-old vendor who dealt a sound thrashing to his wife with a bottle was sent for counseling and ordered to perform community service, when he appeared before Magistrate Dylon Bess in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
Andy Maikoo of Lot 115 West Ruimveldt, Georgetown, admitted to assaulting his wife Shimwattie Arjune on March 11 at their home.
Arjune told the court that on the day in question, she and her husband had a misunderstanding which resulted in her being lashed to the head with a bottle. She explained that her husband usually abuses her when he is under the influence of alcohol. However, she begged the Magistrate to not send Maikoo to jail for the sake of their five children.
At one point, the abusive man became very emotional and wept uncontrollably while standing in the prisoner’s dock.
“I beg your pardon. It won’t happen again,” he told the Magistrate.
Magistrate Bess did indeed exercise his discretion and spared Maikoo from being imprisoned for 18 months. Instead, the Magistrate ordered him to attend six sessions of counseling with his wife. The counseling will include anger management, substance abuse and conflict resolution.
Maikoo was also instructed to complete 150 hours of community service which will be supervised by the Probation Department of the Ministry of Social Protection.
Police Prosecutor, Sergeant Tracey May-Gittens told the court that Maikoo is in the habit of abusing his wife, but she never reported it to police. She said that he dealt the woman several lashes to her face and head with a bottle and used a series of expletives towards her.
Maikoo was reminded by the Magistrate that the only reason he was not sent to jail was because he accepted what he did and made a promise that he would not ill-treat his wife again.
Maikoo subsequently apologized to his wife and exited the courtroom in smiles.
Failure to comply with the court’s order will see the prison term being imposed on him. This matter will be called again on May 30, when the court will be presented with a probation report on his behalf.
