Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Canadian Surplus Guyana Inc. Pramchand Punwasi has decided to donate 60 bed frames to the Guyana Prison Service (GPS). The businessman is scheduled to formally donate the bed frames, along with 500 cases of hospital disposable stretcher sheets, in April.
President of the Guyana-Canada Professional and Business Corporation and Ministerial Advisor on Diaspora Affairs, Tameshwar Lilmohan, facilitated the arrangement. The Advisor informed the Government Information Agency that others have expressed interest in donating items as well.
Minister of Public Security, Khemraj Ramjattan has welcomed the assistance, as the Government moves to reform the local prison system and infrastructure. He said all stakeholders’ efforts to assist are welcome.
A Presidential Commission of Inquiry into the GPS was launched after a riot left 17 prisoners dead on March 3.
