A 20-year-old Bartica resident who confessed to stealing cash from his employer to buy a chair set was
spared from being sent to jail yesterday by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan.
Godfrey David, of Three and a Half Mile, Bartica, admitted that on March 11, he stole $168,000 from within the dwelling house of his employer, Nazir Latiff, at Lot 48 Fourth Avenue, Bartica.
Magistrate McLennan ordered David to complete four months of community service at the Bartica Police Station. Failure to comply with the court’s order will see David being imprisoned for six months.
David was advised by the Magistrate to work for what he wants and desist from stealing.
Police Prosecutor, Inspector Neville Jeffers told the court that David was employed with the complainant as a labourer for over a year. He related that on the day in question, Latiff placed the money in his bedroom and upon his return noticed that it was missing.
Jeffers said that the young man was contacted by his former employer and questioned about the money. The money was later found in David’s possession and he was arrested and charged.
