Colts United and Dyna’s Ravens played in the National Basketball Championships: Mackeson’s Road to Mecca III first semi-final last night at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall after respective wins in the quarterfinal round the night before.
Despite a hot start from Pepsi Sonics, the team fell 48-70 to Colts after a second half offensive meltdown that was inexplicable. Guard, Jason Squires set Sonics on a winning trajectory with back-to-back three-point jumpers that put them up 21-11 in the first quarter.
Sonics went up 31-21 before shooting guard, Shelroy Thomas hauled Colts to within three points to end the first half down 28-31; Sonics then scored four points in the third quarter and 13 points in the fourth quarter for a combined 17 points in two quarters to gift-wrap the game for Colts that struggled offensively early.
Colts scored 42 points in the last half to secure their semi-final berth. Thomas dropped 24 points, while Shane Webster scored 16 points and grabbed 19 rebounds. Swingman, Stanton Rose ended with 15 points for Colts.
Sonics’ Shooting guards, Trevor Smith had 18 points while Squires finished with 17 points and nine rebounds.
In the second game, Ravens ensured that they were back among the top four clubs in Guyana when they beat Guardians 78-63. Guard, Ryan Stephney scored 15 points and grabbed eight rebounds, most of which came in a heroic fourth quarter performance, for Ravens.
Point guard, Dominic Vincente also had 15 points while Jermaine Slater added 12 points and 14 rebounds for a double-double. Ryan Gullen had nine points, while Darcel Harris rolled back some years with two huge jumpers from downtown and vintage Showtime layup.
For Guardians, guard, Nikkoloi Smith had 26 points while Ron Campbell finished with 17 points in the game. Ravens ended the first half up 31-28 before a third quarter 46-46 deadlock. However, Stephney led Ravens offence in the final quarter where they outscored Guardians 32-17 to bounce away with the win.
The Final Four playoffs were held last night. Ravens played Colts in the first game, while Raiders came up against Pacesetters in the final game. The Final of the National Basketball Championships will be held on Saturday at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
