The workshop was held at the Port Mourant Community Centre, Corentyne Berbice. The facilitator was former National Captain and present National Coach and BVA President Levi Nedd. The course was held under the theme: “Live Up don’t Give up with Suicide”. During the sessions the participants were taught techniques, tactics, physical conditioning and did a good amount of psychology training and were given a brief history of the game.
Volleyball was invented by Mr. William Morgan in 1895 in Holyoke Massachusetts, USA. In 1896 the name was changed to volleyball. The game was mostly spread around the world by the Young Men Christian Association (YWCA) and soldiers during world war one. Beach volleyball was started in Florida USA.
In the beginning nine players used to occupy the court for play in rows of threes. This is still practical in some parts of China.
Digging was invented by Japanese women, also crossing and hitting, rotating and arm swing.
In 1964 volleyball was introduced in the Olympic which was held in Tokyo Japan. Beach volleyball was first played in the Olympic Games in 1996. By 1997 there were 218 countries affiliated to the FIVA.
The participants were also shown and guided on the organizational chart of FIVA.
The attributes of a coach includes being a teacher, a leader an organizer, be positive, be an educator, have prestige, have good personality, be a communicator and a role model.
Communication and its importance to the game was also looked at.
Among some of the key points dealt with were: Coaching -Service skills, attacking and defensive skills.
Principles of training- when selecting players to form a team, drills should be compatible with player’s skills.
Key elements of the training workout include -duration, volume, rest and repetitions, warming up.
Preparing and the importance of training sheets- Systems of play, sequence of play, attack, blocking, defence, counter attack.
Types of passing- W formation, cup formation, spoon formation, bowl formation
Types of attacks-spread, cross, swing, wild, tandem or change.
What to look for when selecting a player and different types of training techniques.
During the workshop the participants were taken through a full regiment of practical drills which include techniques training. Warm up without ball- to prevent injuries and further preparation; warm up with ball and warm down. Attack from different positions- left, centre, right.
Defence includes blocking moves, learning court positions, different attacks, panning.
Different types of setting-simple, complex, tipping among other plays. Tactic training- the planning and execution of a training programme: weekly daily long term.
