Alpha ‘The Hammer’ United managed to salvage a draw against the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) while Bakewell Slingerz on account of goals either side of play continued their march towards championship honours when the STAG Elite League FINALE continued on Friday evening last with round 5 matches at the GDF ground, Camp Ayangana.
Contesting the feature match, Alpha United had to pull out all the stops to come away with an equal share of the points against the nippy GDF side which took the lead in the 14th minute through a well executed shot off the boot of Delroy Fraser.
Right side midfielder Jeffery Perreira headed the ball into the path of the onrushing Fraser who eased his way between two Alpha defenders before he unleashed a powerful right foot shot that rocketed past Alex Murray who stood between the uprights for Alpha.
Alpha were without the services of Anthony Abrams, Anthony Benfield and Shavane Seaforth who all attracted red cards in their previous match against Slingerz. The intensity of that match on Wednesday night and the fact that the players had little or no time to recover before Friday’s encounter took its toll on the legs of the Alpha players. Both Slingerz and Fruta Conquerors also faced a similar scenario.
GDF held the upper hand against the former number one side in Guyana with their nippy style of play keeping the Alpha players vigilant as ever as they sought to keep up.
Alpha were finally able to neutralize the GDF’s advantage when their leading marksman, Delon Lanferman latched on to one that he finished clinically in the 57th minute much to the relief of his teammates and Technical staff.
The draw for Alpha saw them maintaining third place in the points standings on 8 points, one more than the Army in fourth place.
Slingerz FC continued their unbeaten run with their fifth win in as many matches in the FINALE even as Conquerors had their chances to score but were not able to convert. Smart thinking by Vurlon Mills 36 minutes into the battle produced the opening goal in an otherwise tight clash.
The ball was passed deep into the Conquerors area and while goalkeeper, Derrick Carter and a defender were both hesitant as to who should go for the ball, split second thinking from Mills saw him attacking the ball and heading past the flat footed Carter.
As the exchanges continued and Conquerors muffed their chances, Slingerz continued their search for another goal which came off the boot of another consistent player, a tormentor of many defences, Trayon Bobb in the 65th minute.
That goal put the sealer on the match for Slingerz now riding five points clear at the top of the points table on 15, Conquerors remaining on 10 points in second place. With two more matches to play, Slingerz seems destined for another title in their short but exciting history so far.
Round five matches were set to conclude last night at the #5 ground, West Coast, Berbice where home team Monedderlust opposed Buxton United and GFC faced Pele.
