Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan ordered a Sophia man to do four weeks community service after he pleaded guilty to a simple larceny charge, when he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
It is alleged that between March 8 and March 9, last, at Durban Backlands, Winston Marks stole one Stihl Chainsaw valued at $150,000 property of Rango Chand. It is also alleged that between February 13 and February 15, 2015 he broke and entered the storeroom of Rango Chand, and stole another chainsaw. Marks pleaded guilty but offered an explanation.
Marks told the court that while he was employed by Chand he was owed on several occasions or paid less than the agreed salary. He said that since they refused to pay him his money he seized the chainsaws.
The Magistrate advised the defendant that he should have gone to the Ministry of Labour instead of taking matters into his own hands.
Prosecutor Dinero Jones related the facts of the matter to the court. He stated that Chand secured his storeroom. The defendant who is employed by the virtual complainant broke a window and entered the storeroom twice and stole the chainsaws.
Winston, 25, of lot 1 D Field Sophia who is a mason was reprimanded on one charge and was given four weeks community service or a default of four weeks in prison for the second offence.
