A reward is being offered to anyone with information on the fire that destroyed a house at Good Hope, East Coast Demerara (ECD) on Thursday morning.
Yesterday, an employee, who works with the owner of the building, Ramzan Gafoor, said that the businessman is offering a $1M reward to anyone who has information on what transpired that day.
Gafoor is a spare parts and auto dealer, who left Guyana some time last week with his family.
A source from the Guyana Fire Service yesterday said that the cause of the fire was still unknown up to press time. He further revealed that ranks from the department were at the scene up to late yesterday conducting investigation.
Kaieteur News was told that while the cause of the fire has not been determined as yet, the owner of the property is convinced that the fire, which started around 10:00 hrs, was an act of arson.
The businessman has since decided to get to the bottom of the investigation, hence the $1M reward.
According to reports, the interior of the single-flat concrete house, which is located in what is popularly known as the Kissoon Scheme, suffered extensive damage.
A neighbour who lives a few doors away told this newspaper that he came out onto his verandah and saw smoke billowing from within the Gafoor’s house. He immediately concluded that the house was on fire, especially since he saw some other villagers already gathering outside the well-secured property.
He said that the fire service was contacted, while some villagers contemplated breaking the gate to get into the yard to remove the vehicles that were parked inside.
Eventually, workers at Gafoor’s business place, which is located about a mile away on the East Coast Demerara Public Road, arrived and entered the yard and began removing things of value.
Residents lamented the length of time that firefighters took to arrive at the scene.
Again they believe that had they arrived earlier there would have been less damage.
”Like they come from town. They tek about half hour to three-quarter hour before they come, and then when they come, they had to set up. If they de come earlier they coulda save de building,” the neighbour said.
