(Flashback)- Group 4 racer Irfaan Kalamadeen (right) poses next to his Mazda RX 7 machine at the team’s garage.
Despite being off the track for almost one year, Group 4 competitor Irfaan Kalamadeen still believes that the March 20 ‘National Race of Champions’ Meet could be a defining one for him, one that could provide him with another opportunity to showcase his talent.
Widely regarded as a skilful racer, Kalamadeen has been dogged on many occasions by lack of reliability with his 13B Turbo-charged Mazda RX7 machine which has failed to perform as expected.
However, with a spot on the Guyana team that will compete in the first leg of the Caribbean Motor Racing Championship (CMRC) up for grabs and Guyana hoping to send a strong contingent to represent its title, Kalamadeen will no doubt want to cement his place with a dominant performance against an anticipated strong group of drivers.
Speaking with Kaieteur Sport via telephone yesterday, the experienced racer revealed that the Team has done a lot of improvenments to the car including suspension upgrades and releiving the car of a lot of weight to make it quicker all-round and much more competitive.
“Right now we are awaiting the arrival of tuner Omar Crespo out of Florida to put in the finishing touches to complete our preparations and I’m optimistic that we will be ready for race day,” Kalamadeen disclosed.
Quizzed on whether the lack of seat time could affect his performance, Kalamadeen replied in the nagative, stating he is extremely familiar with the machine and how it handles so the inadequacy of practice will not significantly impinge on his performance.
He reckoned that drivers such as Kevin and Kristian Jeffrey, Danny Persaud, Mark Vieira, who will be returning from a hiatus as well and the veteran Andrew King, are all formidable opponents, but still believes that his willingness to mix with them and his knowledge of the track could boost his chances of upstaging them.
He said that the Meet should be a good one filled with exciting challenges and urged motor racing fans to get to the South Dakota Circuit to witness the thrill.
Meanwhile, among the sponsors on board to date are GTT and Fly Jamaica and admission to the races is $1,000 for adults and $500 for children under the age of 12 years.
Starting time is 09:30 hrs.
