Linden resident, Calvin Bailey, is facing yet another trial in the High Court for the murder of his 18-month-old son, Shaquan Nero. Bailey is charged for the murder which occurred in April 2007.
According to reports, the cutlass-wielding man hacked the toddler to death during a confrontation with the child’s mother, Bernadette Nero.
The reports also indicated that the infant’s mother had been holding him in her arms during the altercation.
Bailey, called ‘Lava’, of Wisroc Housing Scheme; Agricola, East Bank Demerara and Campbellville, Georgetown was later identified as the attacker.
He reportedly fled the scene following the stabbing and remained in hiding for several months.
The accused was arrested and charged some time later for the murder.
Bailey is currently facing a trial before Justice Priya Sewnarine-Beharry and a mixed 12-member jury for the offence. His trial commenced on Thursday.
State Prosecutors Michael Shahoud and Orinthia Schmidt are presenting the case while the accused is being represented by Attorney Peter Hugh.
This is the second retrial before a Judge and Jury for the accused. He had faced trials for the offence in 2013 and 2014. Both ended in hung jury verdicts.
