Dear Editor,
He stood immaculately tall as the immovable Mount Roraima; predictably soaring to unparalleled heights at every stroke during his illustrious career. His credentials are as impressive as any Diplomat whose duty is to serve with distinction, loyalty and dedication. He remained a faithful soldier, resolute in defence; yet his record remained unblemished, even with the prevailing temptation by others to inflict weapons of mass corruption and sow seeds of discord to the noble game he so diligently preserved.
A true patriot he was; beaten at times for pace and even floored, stumped as well as being betrayed; yet he would rise every time to claim victory, even if it was for himself. He did it many times because there were seldom partnerships to embrace his inimitable skill and marathon vigils. The critics were then swift to shout about selfishness, yet many of his contemporaries were too greedy to even rescue their own existence in the team or perhaps they were just talented illusionists.
Shivnarine Chanderpaul remains a cricketing institution of the highest calibre whose remarkable humbleness and inevitable rise to stardom has deservedly secured his place as one of Guyana’s national heroes.
As the Country prepares to triumphantly celebrate its golden jubilee, cementing fifty years of independence on May 26th, I proudly join in recommending that the Order of Roraima be conferred on Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Cricketer Extraordinaire for his devout and distinguished contribution to Guyana’s rich cricketing legacy and indeed the unifying joy and passion he conspicuously created among fans around the world.
Elroy Stephney.
