– described as courageous by Top Cop
Police Sergeant 16934 Leonard La Rose was yesterday laid to rest at the Christianburg Cemetery with full military honours including a 21-gun salute.
The burial followed a poignant funeral service at the Mackenzie Sports Club ground, where persons travelled from all across the country to pay their final respects. La Rose was a resident of Wisroc, Linden.
Among those paying respects and giving glowing tributes was Commissioner of Police Seelall Persaud.
Persaud described La Rose in glowing terms, reflecting on his career, where he was promoted to Corporal in 2009 then to Sergeant in 2014.
The commissioner said that La Rose was “a very courageous individual – a very good public servant and a very dedicated policeman”. He reflected that La Rose would have paid the ultimate price, doing that which he loved to do.”
The slain police Sergeant was also paid tribute to in poetry and song, with the veteran vocalist Winston Caesar singing the song ,”He ain’t heavy”, which drew many a tear and loud applause. A group of trainee teachers also sang two touching renditions, one of which was the famous “Lean on me’, which was their way of telling one of La Rose’s daughters, who is also a teacher, that they are all there for her.
Sergeant La Rose, 52, was stabbed in the neck and was pronounced dead at the Matthew’s Ridge Hospital last week Tuesday (March 1st). Another rank was stabbed in the chest, while a third was wounded in the hand.
The attacker, identified as Dennis Marks, was shot in the right leg. He was treated at the Matthew’s Ridge Hospital before being taken into police custody.
A police release stated that ranks stationed at Matthews Ridge, NWD, went to arrest Marks who was wanted pending investigations into a report of alleged rape.
Reports out of Matthews Ridge indicated that the suspect was intoxicated at the time of the incident, and that there had been reports that he was physically assaulting a woman at his home.
Sergeant La Rose was stationed in the interior since 1999.
