North Georgetown Branch of the Guyana Teachers Union (GTU) launched its 50th Independence Track and Field Meet yesterday with Director of Sports, Christopher Jones commending the zone for their
initiative at the Union’s Headquarters, Woolford Avenue.
“This event is part of our 50 Shades of Games, which we will be hosting throughout the year at various venues,” Jones said, adding that “it’s good to see corporate Guyana supporting the event” since Government cannot always fund events alone.
The North Georgetown 50th Independence Track and Field meet will be held at the Police Sports Club Ground, Eve Leary on March 20 from 4pm. The competition features athletes from clubs as Guyana Defence Force, Guyana Police Force, Super Upcoming Runners, Mercury Fast Laners and Rurallites.
District Sports Representative, Mariska Williams said that they have also attracted the two other Districts from outside Georgetown, East Coast Demerara and Bartica. Asked about the participation arch-rivals, Linden, Williams said that Upper Demerara was not invited.
She said that Running Brave Athletics Club was invited, but declined the invitation. Williams informed that when she approached one of the Coaches of Running Brave, she was told that “the Club do not participate where they are not welcomed”.
“Our District is disappointed that our athletes, who form the bulk of Running Braves will not get to compete and benefit from this meet,” she said. North Georgetown is contemplating competing as a team to combat the threat of their athletes not participating.
“We recognise that this event will be a success with your support; this meet would not have been possible without corporate support. There is no other way for athletes to showcase talent than in a Jubilee Year,” the long-standing sports representative said.
Courts Guyana Inc. Marketing Manager, Pernell Cummings indicated that the company is pleased to be part of the event. He said that Courts has enjoyed the support of Guyanese and it is only fitting that they give back.
“We are pleased to be part of this since a great nation needs healthy people,” Cummings said. The athletes and clubs will compete for medals and trophies.
