A third man was yesterday remanded to prison, after being charged with the murder of Regent Multiplex Mall owner, Ganesh ‘Boyo’ Ramlall.
Appearing before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan was Kurt ‘Banana’ Erskine, 35, of Lot 285 Section C, Golden Grove, East Bank Demerara.
The father of four was not required to plead to the indictable charge which alleged that on July 5, 2015, at La Jalousie, West Coast Demerara, he murdered Ramlall, during the course of a robbery.
Erskine was captured last Friday by police in Georgetown. Police had been trying to locate him for some time, ever since they received reports that he played a major role in the attack.
Erskine, a welder, was represented by Attorney Lyndon Amsterdam. The Attorney told the court that his client is surprised at the charge leveled against him, since the murder occurred almost a year ago. Amsterdam, however, told the court that his client intends to prove his innocence.
Police Corporal, Deniro Jones presented the prosecution’s case.
The matter was transferred to the Leonora Magistrate’s Court for March 29.
Two other men, Lennox ‘Soldier Man’ Roberts, 32, of 2279 Tuschen Housing Scheme, East Bank Essequibo and Fazeel ‘Javed’ Bacchus, 21, of Lot 7 Anna Catherina, West Coast Demerara were charged last year, for killing the businessman. They were arrested after police raided a house at Craig, East Bank Demerara, shortly after the killing.
According to reports, on July 5, last, Ramlall had just returned home from a barbecue and had gone to use an outdoor bathroom at his premises. The 48-year-old businessman was reportedly confronted by four men and was shot to the head and chest. The bandits took his jewellery and a wallet before escaping.
Ramlall was later pronounced dead on arrival at the West Demerara Regional Hospital.
The assailants had prematurely aborted their attack when an alarm was raised by the businessman’s wife and neighbours.
