A 23-year-old goldminer was yesterday released on $30,000 bail when he appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan. Kendall Lewis, a/k ‘Blackberry’, of Ann’s Grove, East Coast Demerara, denied the charge of stealing seven pennyweights of raw gold from Samantha Marshall on March 7, last.
It was further alleged that on the same day he had two grams of cannabis sativa (marijuana) in his possession. Both incidents occurred at Aranka Backdam, Cuyuni River.
Lewis, who had no legal representation, pleaded not guilty to both charges and will make his next court appearance on March 30, in the Bartica Magistrate’s Court.
Police Prosecutor, Corporal Deniro Jones, had no objections to bail and informed the court that the stolen gold was not recovered.
Jones also stated that the defendant has no prior convictions.
