Focused on inspiring others as Pro Career continues
By Franklin Wilson
Golden Jaguars Senior Captain Christopher Nurse is now on the roster of Puerto Rico Football Club (PRFC)
which competes in the North American Soccer League (NASL) and back to continue his career in a country which has been healthy hunting ground for the midfielder who won his first North American championship whilst representing Puerto Rico.
Speaking with Kaieteur Sport about his return to PRFC, Nurse, who moved from the Carolina RailHawks FC another NASL club, said that as a youngster he never imagined that he would be able to motivate and inspire people to be successful let alone being a role model for kids to aspire to.
“As I’ve grown older my focus is a lot less about what football can do for me individually, it’s about how I can use my gifts and talents and the game to give back and to help others. Of course I am a fierce competitor on the field and I want to win always.”
Nurse who has described his return to PRFC as a project stated that it’s about is about winning and success but the Club owner also has a purpose for investing in this club.
“A purpose to give back and provide opportunity to give the kids and the people positive hopes and aspirations,” He noted.
Nurse also said that as he grows older, one of the most satisfying aspects of the game is being able to positively affect people’s lives whilst also bringing moments of hope and happiness to them.
“I don’t think most of my opponents will agree with that sentiment as I am known to be a tough tackler. But that is part of the joy of the game. That’s why this sport is so special. It is crazy to imagine the things that can be achieved on and off the field in the game of soccer. Just a round ball and a grass field can have such an impact on lives, communities and countries.”
While Nurse is gratified that the Puerto Rico FC has signed him up to be part of their special project and team, he posits that his first task is to be the best that he can be on the field.
“So there will be a lot of hard work, sacrifice and preparation because we will be hitting the ground running in July ready to make a statement. I won my first championship in North America here representing Puerto Rico and I want to win many more.”
The Central midfielder, who has led Guyana to its best ever placing in World Cup Qualifying, said that his coach knows the league well and knows what to expect so they will be organized and well prepared.
The 31 year-old Nurse also commented on this month ends Men’s Caribbean Championship match against Puerto Rico in that country.
“In regards to Guyana facing Puerto Rico on March 29, they are not a nation to be underestimated. Despite the FIFA rankings of both countries it will be a game with a lot of heart and passion would be exhibited. The Puerto Rican players play with a lot of heart and this is always a dangerous weapon.”
The Golden Jaguar also said that similar to many Caribbean nations, Puerto Rico is another sleeping giant capable of upsetting anyone.
“So despite rankings and perception they are not to be taken lightly whatsoever.” He concluded.
Guyana has been drawn in Group 5 along with Anguilla whom they will play here on Tuesday March 22nd before travelling to Puerto Rico for their date on the 29th. Anguilla will welcome the Puerto Ricans on March 26th.
