Positioning themselves as trailblazers, the Berbice Volleyball Association (BVA) continues to charter into untouched areas with success after success.
After successfully completing a two day Secondary Schools Development Workshop for Physical Education and Sports teachers in collaboration with the Department of Education Region 6 Allied Arts Department, the BVA has moved a step further.
The activity, which was held at the Port Mourant Training School Annex and Volleyball Court at Port Mourant Corentyne Berbice, saw 14 of the 17 schools invited in attendance. The BVA has now handed over a quantity of equipment, including Balls for training and playing purpose, nets, rules and scoring books and other literature to the department which was subsequently handed over to each school present.
President of the BVA Levi Nedd did the honours with Physical Education and Sports Officer in the Region and member of the National Sports Commission, Inga Henry, accepting on behalf of the Department of Education. The activity was held under the theme “KEEP THE BALL FLYING” which is the theme of the BVA.
Henry in thanking Mr. Nedd and the BVA, stated that it, is part of the Ministry objective to reintegrate Physical Education and Sports back into the school system. She stated that she is very impressed with the work that the BVA is doing. The lauded the BVA for being the first on board and called upon other associations to take a page out of the BVA book and join with the Department of Education to get sports back into the school system.
Nedd thanked Henry for giving the BVA the opportunity to impart the knowledge to the teachers and for work with the school system. Volleyball he said is part of him and he is always willing to assist in any way possible. The BVA plans to do intensive follow up with all the schools that participated. Liaison persons that include some national players have already been appointed to work along with each school.
The programme is the first in a series of activities for PE and Sports teachers, it was also used to get the teachers better equipped to prepare the students are writing PE and the CXC level.
The schools that participated were Skeldon Line Path, JC Chandisingh, Port Mourant Secondary, Berbice Educational Institute, Corentyne Comprehensive, Manchester Secondary, Lower Corentyne Secondary, Central Corentyne Secondary, New Amsterdam Multilateral, Canje Secondary, Tutorial Academy, Berbice High, Tagore Memorial and Vryman’s Erven secondary.
The schools that did not participate were not able to receive their package were Black Bush Secondary, Skeldon High and Winifred Gaskin Secondary. (Samuel Whyte)
