Guyana (amateur) middleweight boxing champion, Dennis Thomas and his light/heavyweight counterpart, Desmond Amsterdam, depart Guyana tonight for Suriname en-route to Buenos Aires, Argentina, to compete in the Olympics Box-off slated for that country starting tomorrow.
The two boxers will be accompanied by Coach Sebert Blake and will aspire to make the grade for the Summer Olympics in Brazil later this year. Mr. Blake said that the two boxers are both national champions and are the best options available to medal. He said that they stand a very good chance of qualifying.
Blake said that the journey is lengthy and leaves the boxer little time to become acclimatized in Argentina. The team depart Suriname mere hours after landing there for the continuation of their journey to French Guiana. They then change flight for Belem before stopping over briefly in Brasilia and then the final leg to Argentina.
With the summer games just a few months away, to qualify now is best since the cost to compete at the World Championships in June might be prohibitive. There are two other qualifiers, the AIBA Open Boxing Championships (AOBC) and the World Championships in June but Guyana is not eligible for the first and the cost of attending the second event might prove to be prohibitive. “We have to take full advantage of this opportunity,” Blake said before the team departed.
Meanwhile, the team benefited from the chivalry of the Guyana Olympics Association when its President, K A Juman Yassin, presented Mr. Blake with funds to offset the accommodation costs. Mr. Blake said that while the gesture was commendable, the team is still short of US$1,000. Up to late yesterday afternoon he was working in tandem with President of the GBA, Steve Ninvalle and President of the Guyana Boxing Board of Control (GBBC), Peter Abdool to fill the breach.
