Guyana won the bid to host the Caribbean Basketball Confederation (CBC) Under-16 Male and Female
Championships that will be held during July 2-9. Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation (GABF) made the disclosure yesterday.
The CBC U-16 Championships will qualify three teams to the 2017 CentoBasket U-17 Men and Women’s Championships. Kaieteur Sport reported last month after the CBC General Assembly that the official host would have been known this month.
“This being Guyana’s Golden Jubilee year of Independence, it will be a wonderful opportunity to showcase the school players,” GABF President, Nigel Hinds said, adding that it is the perfect opportunity to show how sport and education come together.
“This will be a first for Guyana and an exceptional opportunity for the school administrators and student-athletes in Guyana to underline the development and promotion of sports as part of the school curriculum,” he continued.
Hinds informed that the host budget for the Championships is $60M. Guyana was the front runner to host the CBC U-16 Championships. The Caribbean Basketball Confederation is a Sub-Zone of FIBA (The International Basketball Federation).
Vice-President of Finance and Marketing at CBC, Patrick Haynes, who is also a Honorary General Secretary at the GABF, played a crucial role in helping Guyana secure the bid. Hinds is a FIBA Governance Commission Board Member. Hinds and Haynes had represented Guyana at the prestigious CBC Assembly.
