A 37-year-old mini bus driver was yesterday ordered to post $800,000 bail and surrender his licence
after his arraignment in Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan’s court on a charge of causing death by dangerous driving.
Sherwin Hopkinson of North Ruimveldt, Georgetown, pleaded not guilty to the charge which stated that on March 5, at Aubrey Barker Public Road, South Ruimveldt, Georgetown, he drove minibus BVV 1302 in a manner dangerous to the public and caused the death of William Trim.
According to reports, Trim, a 78-year-old pensioner of Wren Avenue, South Ruimveldt, was killed after the car he was driving collided with a minibus.
It was reported that the elderly man was driving his car PFF 8165, along Aubrey Barker Road when a route 41 minibus crashed into him.
Police Prosecutor, Corporal Deniro Jones told the court that on the day in question, the defendant was driving the bus at a fast rate, overtaking several other vehicles in his path. He subsequently lost control of the bus and collided with the car that Trim was driving.
The court heard that the car pitched several feet away from the point of impact. Trim was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. While Prosecutor Jones had no objection to the defendant being granted pre-trial liberty, he requested that it be set in a substantial amount.
The Chief Magistrate suspended Hopkinson’s driver’s licence until the completion of the matter, which will be called again on March 30, for statements.
