– will help secure Orealla’s economy
A new $30M project will see the construction of a ramp, wharf and storage room at Corriverton to safeguard the livelihood of farmers in the indigenous community of Orealla, East Berbice, Corentyne.
The wharf is among key projects which the Region Six, Regional Democratic Council (RDC) will undertake this year, with its more than $5.7B budget.
“We are building this wharf in Corriverton, because the Amerindian people have been complaining to us that they do not have anywhere to unload their produce when they bring it out from the river,” Regional Chairman David Armogan explained in a recent interview with the Government Information Agency.
Armogan said that the intervention to assist the indigenous community includes the construction of a storeroom because, “They (the farmers of Orealla) have been complaining that when they bring the produce, (to the coast) because they do not have anywhere to store it, what invariably happens is that they have to sell it very cheaply to the people who retail.”
He added, “They work very hard to get those things in; they ask for little and we are doing it because we want them to make extra dollars for themselves,” he said.
Two other key projects to be undertaken by the regional administration this year, are the construction of a new school at Number 36 Village and a new wing at the New Amsterdam Hospital. Armogan explained that the school will house both the nursery and primary level children. It will replace an older structure that currently houses 200 primary students and 60 nursery students.
He explained that the region is seeking to build a structure that can house over 450 students in an effort to cater for the growing population of the area and movement of people. Number 36 Village is home to one of the region’s biggest rice mills. Armogan pointed out, “There is a likelihood that persons would move to the village to be closer to this place of employment. There is need to have a school that is capable of taking on additional children in the future,” he observed.
The Regional Chairman also explained that the school’s construction may be somewhat delayed due to an issue with the ownership of the land on which the school is to be constructed. This is the land that the old school sits.
He added that the Anglican Church is claiming the land and that the Region is working to get this issue sorted out quickly.
Armogan said that the Region has located a spot within the compound of the New Amsterdam Hospital for the new Accident and Emergency wing. He said that the wing is critical since the hospital is currently crowded.
In addition, the Region will also be working to expand the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) within the hospital.
The current unit is small and only has four beds. “For a regional hospital with a four- bed ICU, I do not think that it is enough to cater for the needs of our big community…so whilst we move the Accident and Emergency Unit we are also looking to expand the ICU.”
Armogan explained that 2016 will also see much focus on the excavation of lands in East Bank Berbice to open new arable lands for farmers.
Because Region Six is an agricultural region, the Regional Chairman said that, the administration continues to focus on interventions to secure agricultural lands. “When we look at the entire Berbice, we have almost exhausted all of the land on the coastal area, but we still have available lands on the East Bank of Berbice and so we are going to do a lot of work there in terms of drainage and irrigation so that people can get to the land there and continue to do their farming,” he expounded.
Advertisements for the Region’s 2016 programme have already begun and works are expected to start by the end of March.
