Dear Editor,
Tonight I watched the debate; it was very impressive of the professional organized manner it was conducted in. Congrats to the organizers. I am however extremely disappointed that none of the parties including my group supported a female as a debater. It is so important that women voters take note of the trend, all male panel. Will there be an all man council. Women make up the majority of the voting population let’s start the advocacy going to ensure 50% of the council is made up of women.
Globally, research has shown that ethnically diverse and divided nations such as Guyana that elect women rather than men to key national leadership offices end up with better economic performance. Including women in local governments is a key factor in creating gender sensitive policies and services.
We cannot afford to ignore the largely untapped pool of women leaders in seeking to fill our elected and appointed public offices. This not a social issue of parity or fairness, but an economic imperative for our country to reach out and tap the other half of the population–the large pool of women civic, business and community leaders. The solution to this problem is not simple.
The interplay of structural and social barriers to women’s participation in the political arena require new methods of support, and new thinking by public sector officials at all levels of government about how to attract and retain diversity in their ranks.
