Mae’s became the first big casualty in this year’s Milo Under-20 Schools Football Competition after suffering defeat in a penalty shootout against South Ruimveldt Secondary on the final day of Round of Sixteen action, at the Ministry of Education ground, Carifesta Avenue.
Playing in the third fixture of yesterday’s round of matches, the Subryanville-based unit, who started as favourites to come out victorious, must only blame themselves for their exit after missing numerous chances to seal the deal in regulation time which ended 1-1, before South Ruimveldt prevailed 4-3 in the penalty shootout after extra time failed to declare a winner.
An own goal following a goalmouth scrimmage accounted for Mae’s lead after twenty-nine minutes an ascendancy that they took to the break.
On the resumption, they had a few more opportunities to stretch their advantage, but errant shooting kept South Ruimveldt in the game and eventually they got the equaliser through Cecil Jackman, who raced on to the end of a pass from the right side that eluded at least three defenders to fire past the Mae’s custodian in the 55th minute.
Bouyed by the success, South Ruimveldt grew in confidence and orchestrated some threatening forays on the Mae’s backline, but both defences stood firmly until the final whistle souned to signal overtime.
That too failed to produce an outright winner and spot kicks was the next order of the day which South Ruimveldt won after exhibiting the greater mental fortitude in a nerve racking shootout to make the quarter-final.
Defending champion Chase Academy coasted to a comfortable 3-1 triumph over a game, but clearly outclassed Kingston to make it to the last eight, while Christ Church also looked impressive in a similar scoreline win against Queenstown.
In the other game of the day, North Georgetown beat St. John’s 4-2 to book their place in the last eight as well.
