A Region Five official is in hot water and could face fraud charges over a house lot he attempted to sell in West Berbice last week.
The official, an auditor, was held over the weekend by police after complaints were made.
According to reports, the auditor owns a piece of land in Bath Settlement, which he had acquired since the mid-2000’s.
He subsequently received his ownership documents.
From all indications he wanted to sell it and found a buyer- a Barbados-based Guyanese.
A deal was reached for $1M.
Last Monday, both the auditor and the buyer reached at New Amsterdam and signed up documents at an office there, including a Power of Attorney.
The paperwork identified the piece of land as Lot 700. However, the buyer was allegedly taken by the auditor and shown Lot 713.
The buyer, being none-the-wiser believed that all was above board and paid over the $1M that was being asked for the land.
However, problems emerged a few days later when the new “owner” decided to start doing work on the land.
He was told by persons that someone else owned the land.
The upset man confronted the auditor and reported the matter to the police at New Amsterdam, in Region Six.
However on Friday, the auditor reportedly took police from Blairmont, a community in Region Five, to the buyer’s home alleging that he was threatened.
The police took both parties to the Blairmont Police Station to sort things out. There surprised by the turn events had taken, the buyer informed the investigators that he had previously made a report against the auditor at New Amsterdam and nothing was done.
The investigators then contacted their counterparts at the Central Police Station in New Amsterdam and indeed found that it was true that they had a report against the auditor.
Police then arrested the auditor and placed him on $100,000 station bail on Saturday.
He could find himself in court sometime this week.
In the meantime, he has reportedly offered to give the buyer a Canter truck as a settlement in the matter.
He reportedly told the buyer that he used the money to pay a loan.
The auditor has until today to reach a settlement with the buyer.
