Lord’s 6-98 helps GCC to 1st innings points over Police
By Sean Devers
Stephon Campbell and Gajanand Suknanan added 130 for the sixth wicket to spur GNIC to an emphatic innings and 160-run win yesterday against GYO on the final day of their GCA’s GISE, Trophy Stall & Star Party first division two-day match at Malteenoes.
Left-arm spinner Devon Lord kept Police in jail with 6-98 as the cops were fired out for 296 at Bourda after resuming the day on 46-1, falling 29 short of GCC’s 328-8 declared.
GCC in their second innings were 66-4 when the game ended with Kempton Grumble (3-10) doing the damage with the ball.
At MSC, GNIC resumed on 292-5 in reply to GYO’s 166 and Campbell and Suknanan extended their stand with attractive batting. Suknanan was the more aggressive of the two on the first day but yesterday he fell in the day’s second over for 59 with two fours and four sixes at 295-6.
Divesh Ramjattan lured the well set Campbell out of his crease and beat him with flight to have him caught at cover when nine short of his ton. His innings was decorated with eight fours.
Surendra Hirilal (4-72) and Ramjattan (2-59) were the most successful bowlers for GYO who demonstrated little fight and were bundled out for 115 with only Chris Deonarine, who top-scored with 79 in the first innings, offering token resistance with 32. Gajanand Singh had 5-25 and Suknanan 4-35 to finish with 10-77 in the match which was over just after Lunch.
Scores: GYO (166 & 115), GNIC (328-8 declared).
At Bourda, Police resumed with Jason Heyliger (19) and Kevin Leitch (18) at the crease and the pair began digging an escape route with determined batting and both seemed well set to post centuries when Martin Pestano-Bell disturbed Leitch’s stumps at 140-2 to end the 133-run second wicket stand. Leitch reached the boundary 15 times and cleared it once in his 87.
The 22-year-old Lord trapped Korvin Austin (10) LBW at 168-3 and had Heyliger caught and bowled at 206-4. Heyliger’s 80 included 13 fours.
Robin Brown (20), Stephon Harris (28) and Daniel Barker (25), who was run out at the non-strikers’ end after a smart piece of fielding at mid-on, all got good starts as Police almost escaped with first innings points.
Lord was supported by Pestano-Belle (2-56) for GCC, already assured of a place in the semi-finals with one match to go.
The host lost Manny Ford (5) at 16-1, while Pestano-Belle (32), Khemraj Jaikarran (23) and Lord who fell for his second duck in the game, were all removed by Grumble as three wickets tumbled for seven runs. But his effort was too little too late for the cops as GCC finished on 66-4 from 15 overs.
Scores: GCC (328-8 declared & 66-4) Police (296).
