Ten male students of Hosororo Primary School in Region One received bicycles, under President David Granger’s ‘Boats, Buses and Bicycles’ (three Bs) initiative, aimed at ensuring that all Guyana’s children are able to attend school.
First Lady, Sandra Granger, travelled to Region One on Friday and presented bicycles to Enrique Rampersaud, Alex Williams, Daleroy Felix, Wayne Chacon, Derick James, Leroy Mendonca, Marlon Daniels, Andrey Daniels, Kurt Ossorio and Enoch Douglas. These students travel from satellite communities as far as the Venezuela border to get to school on a daily basis.
During a simple handing over ceremony at the Hosororo Primary School, First Lady, Sandra Granger reiterated that the bicycles are aimed at improving the students’ attendance in school, since they travel long distances to get to school.
The First Lady encouraged the students stay in school, get educated to make full use the opportunity presented to them, and become great citizens of Guyana.
Twenty-six students also received backpacks equipped with books, pencils, rulers and sharpeners from a group of overseas-based Guyanese who came from Hosororo, Port Kaituma, Mabaruma and Matthews Ridge.
The ‘Boats, Buses and Bicycles’ initiative started back in July 2015, when President David Granger celebrated his 70th birthday. On the occasion he made a call for support for the initiative to ensure that transportation is provided, so that children can get to school.
Since then, there has been a tremendous national response from private citizens and businesses donating buses, bicycles, boats and engines to the programme. A number of boats, bicycles, buses and hundreds of pairs of shoes have been donated to schoolchildren in several communities across the country to date.
