DUBAI – Solid batting and clever bowling at the back end of both innings helped the West Indies
turn back a strong challenge from Warwickshire in their T20 warm-up match yesterday.
Denesh Ramdin (52 not out) and Jason Holder (23 not out) added a vital 68 off the final six overs as the Windies batted first and reached 145-5 off 20 overs on a good pitch at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. Ramdin hit five boundaries off 37 balls to earn the Man-of-the-Match award. Dwayne Bravo then bowled a match-winning spell in the Bears’s innings to limit them to 132-5 – as West Indies secured victory by 13 runs.
He delivered a mixture of well-disguised slower balls and well-directed cutters to end with 3-23 off four overs. Scores: WEST INDIES 145-5 off 20 overs (Denesh Ramdin 52 not out, Jason Holder 23 not out, Darren Sammy 20) WARWICKSHIRE 132-5 off 20 overs (Varun Chopra 42, Ian Bell 35; Dwayne Bravo 3-23).
Speaking with WICB Media after the game, fast bowling legend and bowling consultant Curtly Ambrose said he is satisfied with the performance. “The bowling is coming together, we have had a few good games and there is always room for improvement. I am satisfied the way we are bowling. As a bowling unit we are working with a plan and so far it is going well. I am hoping that by the time we get to India it can come together so that we can do well in this tournament,” he added.
About Dwayne Bravo match winning spell, Ambrose said the all-rounder is a professional and understands T20. “Bravo is going to be an asset in this tournament, there is not too much I can say to him, he is a brilliant player and will lead other bowlers, I am happy with the way he is bowling and he is a good motivator as well”.
Ambrose explained that the team spirit is good. “We are working hard and doing well so far in the warm up games. The spirit is good and we are enjoying what we are doing and that will be the difference,” he said.
“We lost a few early wickets in the second and third games but the good thing about this team is that we have depth and that is going to be the key. We are a team that doesn’t rely on one and two players. When we lost a few early wickets there are guys in the middle and lower order that can come and give us a good total and that is strength. I am quiet comfortable with both batting and bowling, the fielding is good but still can improve, nevertheless I am satisfied,” he stated. Ambrose spoke highly of the Dubai international stadium and pitch.
Full Squad; Darren Sammy (Captain), Samuel Badree, Sulieman Benn, Carlos Brathwaite, Dwayne Bravo, Johnson Charles, Andre Fletcher, Chris Gayle, Jason Holder, Ashley Nurse, Denesh Ramdin, Andre Russell, Marlon Samuels, Lendl Simmons and Jerome Taylor.
