A 20-year-old Lot 3053 North Ruimveldt, Georgetown man was yesterday remanded to prison, although he denied a charge of trafficking in narcotics, when he appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
It is alleged that on March 1, at Princes Street, Georgetown, Akeem Archer had 907 grams of cannabis sativa (marijuana) in his possession for the purpose of trafficking.
Archer was remanded to prison until March 30, after pleading not guilty to the allegation.
Police Prosecutor, Corporal Simone Payne related the facts of the matter. She told the court that on the day in question, ranks from the narcotic branch conducted a sting operation in the area mentioned in the charge. Payne said that the defendant was intercepted while in a motorcar and arrested.
According to the Prosecutor, Archer denied having knowledge of the drug under caution. An Attorney for Archer said that her client has no previous brushes with the law.
She requested that Archer not be remanded to prison because he has to undergo a surgery on his right leg later this month at a private hospital.
However, Magistrate Fabayo Azore told the defendant that bail is not granted for such offences. However, Magistrate Azore assured the lawyer that his client will be taken for his surgery by prison officials. Prosecutor Payne indicated that the police statements are still outstanding from the case file.
