A young woman who is alleged to have doused her best friend with acid was yesterday released on $40,000
bail after she made an appearance in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
Afia Williams, 19, of Lot 11 Company Path, Ruimveldt, Georgetown, is accused of unlawfully and maliciously wounding Lashaun Austin at Laing Avenue, Georgetown on March 2.
Williams, who was unrepresented by an Attorney, stated that she and the victim are best friends and that she, “Didn’t want de matter to end up far”.
Williams related to the court that on the day in question, she made an attempt to return a hair band which she had borrowed from Austin when she was attacked by the woman. She recalled that she was also confronted by Austin’s boyfriend and another person.
She told City Magistrate Fabayo Azore, “When I go in de yard fuh drop back de head band, she start knock me in my head and behind me head back with a stick. Then she boyfriend and he friend come and hold me down”.
Further, Austin told the court that on the day in question, she had inquired from Williams about the hair band but she responded, “I gon bun up de f@*%ing head band yuh hear, bun it up “. Austin said she didn’t take the threats seriously since it was her friend and to her knowledge they had no grievances.
She said a few minutes after, she noticed Williams standing in her yard. She said that when she turned around Williams doused her with the acid and took out a knife. Austin recalled screaming before falling to the ground. According to Austin, her boyfriend and a friend held down Williams and relieved her of the knife.
She said that prior to the incident, she and Williams were involved in a heated argument over a tongue ring and being judged by God.
She also informed the court that she will no longer be going ahead with the matter since relatives of Williams agreed to compensate her. When asked by City Magistrate Fabayo Azore how much she was being compensated Austin said, “I was looking for $200,000 but they could only afford $100,000”.
Magistrate Fabayo Azore asked the relatives of Williams who were present in court if they had the money to pay at that moment. However the relatives mentioned that they only had $60,000. They indicated that they will pay the balance in one week’s time.
Williams was instructed to compensate the woman in full at her next court appearance on March 18.
