Several court appearances for remanded prisoners at the Georgetown Prisons were cancelled as a result of the riots at the Camp Street penitentiary. Several prisoners who were scheduled to appear in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court for the continuation of their matters were kept on ‘lock down’, according to a police source.
It was also confirmed that remand prisoners were not even taken to the Sparendaam or Providence Magistrate’s Court.
In the worst prison riot in Guyana, 17 died and others injured after inmates set the Capitol ‘A’ Block on fire. It is believed that inmates started the fire in an effort to vent their frustrations at the time they are spending on remand awaiting trial.
Kaieteur News was informed that those who were remanded yesterday, for various offences were not taken to the Camp Street prison but to nearby police lock-ups.
And two Cuban men were yesterday fined for uttering forged Permanent Visa Cards to an Immigration Officer at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport. They were subsequently deported after their appearance in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
Roberto Mario Francisco, a 46-year-old Industrial Engineer and Louis El Lavis Vasco, 28, were yesterday fined $70,000 each.
On March 3, at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA), the men uttered to Police Constable Akeem Stuart a forged United States of America Permanent Visa Card in favour of themselves which purported to show that the documents were issued by the United States Government, knowing same to be false.
Failure to pay the fine will see the Cubans spending four weeks in prison. They were represented by Attorney at Law Clyde Forde.
Forde asked the court to impose a non-custodial sentence on his clients since they had no knowledge that the documents were forged. He also stated that both men were issued with the documents in Cuba.
The men were unable to speak English and as such needed a translator to relate the matter to them.
Forde also told the court that his clients were en route to Miami, USA.
