Police have finally captured the 21-year-old man who stabbed his teenage girlfriend, Alicia McPherson, to
death at a Sophia dance ten months ago.
Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum disclosed that the suspect, Shivanand Roopnarine, was captured yesterday at Mabura.
Blanhum said Roopnarine has since confessed to killing 18-year-old Mc Pherson, who was slain on April 19, 2015.
The Crime Chief recalled that the slain teen’s mother had repeatedly lamented to the press that her daughter’s killer was still at large.
“Her mother had gone to the press several times and we had told her that we would get the suspect. Eventually he has been captured,” he said.
Roopnarine was reportedly heading to Mahdia when he was stopped at a checkpoint at Mabura and asked to produce some identification.
It was at this point that a policeman recognized the fugitive and took him into custody.
At first he reportedly denied that he was Roopnarine, but eventually confirmed his identity and admitted to killing his girlfriend, who had resided at of Lot 612 ‘C’ Field Sophia.
Alicia Mc Pherson’s body, which bore more than 15 stab wounds stab wounds, was found near a washroom in a yard located at Cappy’s Place, Dennis Street, Sophia, where a dance was being held.
Roopnarine has reportedly told police that he had become furious after Alicia began to dance with another
man. He then ordered her to leave the dance with him. When she refused, he took her to the back of the yard and stabbed her several times.
He then threw the bloody knife over a fence. Yesterday, the suspect took police back to the area where he had allegedly disposed of the weapon.
The suspect, who hails from Grove, East Bank Demerara and McPherson, 18, of Lot 612 ‘C’ Field Sophia, were reportedly involved in a tumultuous relationship which would sometimes escalate to physical abuse.
However, relatives said that the teen would cover for her boyfriend when asked about her injuries.
