Gavin Pooran, the 23-year-old driver accused of striking down a 72-year-old man and driving away, has been charged with the victim’s death.
According to information, around 18:40 hrs on the day in question Salim Mohammed, of No. 8 village, West Coast Berbice, was riding his motorcycle CH 952 on the way home when he was struck from behind by a Rav 4 motor vehicle, reportedly driven by Pooran, of Bath, West Coast Berbice, owner of the Legalize Trucking Service.
Information revealed that Mohammed was proceeding east on the northern carriageway (towards Rosignol) on his way home from Mosque when in the vicinity of the No.10 public road he was struck by the vehicle which was reportedly travelling at a fast rate.
The man was flung from his bike and received injuries about his body. He was picked up and rushed to the New Amsterdam Hospital before being referred to the Georgetown Public Hospital for emergency treatment. He did not regain consciousness and succumbed one week later.
After the accident, Pooran reportedly drove away from the scene. His vehicle was subsequently found abandoned in a yard at No. 5 village West Coast Berbice.
He turned himself into the police the following day. He was tested for alcohol and it was found that he was still above the legal limit.
The man was initially charged with failing to stop after an accident and failing to render assistance to an injured person. He appeared before Magistrate Rhondell Weever and was placed on $70,000 bail. Pooran was rearrested following the death of Mohammed and slapped with the charge of causing death by dangerous driving and placed on $700,000 bail by Magistrate Weever after he reappeared before her in the Fort Wellington Magistrate Court.
A post mortem examination revealed that the man died from a fractured skull, shock and haemorrhage.
Pooran’s next court date is March 30.
