Customers of the Diamond and Golden Grove housing schemes on Wednesday began receiving
water through their taps after a broken well was repaired. The well has been down for almost three weeks after the casing, located several feet below ground, suffered a breach and started to suck mud.
According to Water Resources Manager, GWI, Orin Browne, “the final stage of the rehabilitation involved testing the well to ensure that it is capable of normal production levels. We are pleased to report that this exercise was successful and we were able to return the well to the Diamond water distribution network on Wednesday afternoon. Customers of Diamond and Kaneville are now receiving water at adequate levels of service.”
The Water Resources Manager assured that GWI will continue to monitor the well station with a camera inspection scheduled for early next week.
“It is important that we continue to consistently monitor the well station to avoid a recurrence. Our priority country-wide is to ensure that customers are receiving a continuous service.”
Further, Divisional Manager, East Bank Demerara, Orion Dhanraj, explained that GWI would be conducting a ‘flushing’ exercise to remove any sediment within the distribution system that serves the communities of Diamond and Kaneville.
“Because there was not a continuous flow of water during the rehabilitation of the well station it is vital that we ‘flush’ the mains to remove any foreign particles,” stated Dhanraj. “This exercise is necessary to maintain water quality standards.”
The rehabilitation of the Diamond Well Station, which services thousands of residents in what is one of the largest housing communities in the country, was supervised by GWI and executed by contractor Nabi Construction Inc. at a cost in excess of $12M.
“GWI wishes to apologize and express gratitude for the patience of all customers of Diamond and Kaneville who were without service during the period of disruption. The company also wishes to express sincere gratitude to the management and employees of the Civil Defence Commission for their assistance with water distribution within the affected communities.”
